Ansari spent three years in a jail in Pakistan.

A top court in Pakistan had given one month deadline to the government to complete formalities to deport Ansari to India.

Ansari, a 33-year-old Mumbai resident, was lodged in the Peshawar Central Jail after being sentenced by a military court to three years’ imprisonment for possessing a fake Pakistani identity card on December 15, 2015.

He had entered Pakistan from Afghanistan on November 12, 2012, with a fake identity card sent to him by his Facebook friend from Karak, a town in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province. He stayed in Karak for two days and was then dropped by his host at a hotel in Kohat city in the northwest, from where he was taken into custody by intelligence officials.

A secret military court had convicted him of espionage and anti-state activities on December 15, 2015, charges that Ansari had denied in his petition filed in the Peshawar HC.

In August this year, the court had disposed of Ansari’s writ petition seeking remission of his three-year prison term after the interior ministry assured the court that he would be deported to India after his jail term gave over on December 15
