Three militants, reportedly Pakistanis, were killed when alert troops foiled a major infiltration bid from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) in the woods in north Kashmir district of Baramulla.
Defence Ministry spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia told UNI on Friday that a search party of Army intercepted a group of militants, which had sneaked into this side of the Line of Control (LoC), at Rampur sector in Baramulla.
When challenged and asked to surrender, militants opened fire, he said, adding troops also retaliated and in the ensuing encounter three militants were killed.
Bodies of all the three slain militants have been recovered, he said, adding four AK-47 rifles and as many haversacks, besides other ammunition were recovered from the encounter site.
He said the search operation was still going on when the reports last came in.
A senior army officer, recently, said about 300 militants are waiting in launch pads in PoK to sneak into this side before the infiltration route are closed due to heavy snowfall. However, he said troops are already on high alert and have intensified night and foot patrolling along the LoC to foil any such attempt.
